Welcoming MEDALLOY’s second cohort of Industrial Doctoral Candidates

MEDALLOY is delighted to welcome Chiara Bonfanti, Maria Blazquez-Romero, and Tommaso Arcaini, who began their PhD journeys at the Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation, University of Galway, last week as part of our Marie Skłodowska-Curie Industrial Doctoral Network.

Joining us from Italy, Chiara and Tommaso bring expertise from the Politecnico di Milano in biomechanics, computational modelling, and cardiovascular engineering, while Maria, arriving from Spain, contributes a background in biomechanics and biomaterials. All three have relocated to Galway, Ireland, to begin this exciting new chapter.

Chiara will work on the verification and validation of the shape-setting process for Nitinol medical devices. She brings a background in Biomedical Engineering and two years of computational research in cardiovascular applications, where she worked with patient-specific simulations and Nitinol medical devices.

Maria joins the Institute for Health Discovery and Innovation to research how to predict device performance and fatigue life for additively manufactured Nitinol devices, under the supervision of Professor Ted Vaughan.

Tommaso will focus on material characterisation and test method development for Nitinol material interchangeability and sustainability, supervised by Dr William Ronan. He brings a background in biomechanical modelling and simulation, including finite element analysis of bone structures and the design of patient-specific 3D-printed scaffolds for bone repair.

Their work will contribute to MEDALLOY’s mission to develop advanced Nitinol alloys with improved performance, optimised manufacturing processes, enhanced defect tolerance, and predictive fatigue life models, combining academic research with industry partnership through the Marie SkÅ‚odowska-Curie Industrial Doctoral Network.

We’re excited to support Chiara, Maria, and Tommaso as they settle into life in Galway and begin their doctoral research. Welcome to the team!
